Lillypilly Estate 2005 Chardonnay

Dry white wine, made from chardonnay grapes.

Straw colour with a hint of green; mineral, citrus and cucumber; medium body, finishing flinty and dry.

CHARDONNAY

Chardonnay is probably the greatest of all white grape varieties and is the only white variety used in the exalted French district of Burgundy.

Unlike its red Burgundian counterpart, pinot noir, which has proved a very fickle proposition outside its homeland, chardonnay has adapted well to many of the world's viticultural areas and is quite at home in the Riverina.

We use it to produce full-bodied, flavoursome dry whites that are quite versatile in their ability to match food — from seafood to white-sauced pasta dishes to meats such as poultry and veal.

CURRENT RELEASE 2005: Good varietal keys introduce this straightforward chardonnay. Melon and syrupy stone fruits, and perhaps a hint of pineapple, are found on the fruit-dominant nose. The palate is smooth and easy with a dry finish and a hint of phenolic firmness at the end. Sip it chilled with Balinese-style fried chicken. SEE CLIPPING

Though consistently enjoying widespread acclaim for his sweet whites, winemaker Robert Fiumara is also capable of producing impressive dry table wines, as demonstrated by the '05 Chardonnay. A VERY GOOD WINE: Lillypilly 2005 Chardonnay ... No surprises here when I tell you this is a classic warm climate Chardonnay varietally. Lovely mid yellow in colour, its aromas are varietal peach and melon, delivered with a full lusciously rich character with fresh lively acidity supporting the fruit. Lightly oaked with a long smooth creamy finish on the palate. Not overwhelmingly big but generous nonetheless. Well made and should develop over the next 3-4 years. Try with tandoor roasted lamb cutlets marinated in yoghurt, sandalwood powder, ginger and saffron. Around $12 . A very good wine.
